Expose to Compose
A good foreground adds interest to your shot, but if it’s poorly exposed it may detract from the image or even ruin it.
The bottom line is: what do you want the viewer to look at?
If it’s a beautiful old jetty on a lake, then I believe you need to have some great detail showing and with a poorly exposed image you will lose all the detail.
Watching the histogram on the back screen of your camera is a great way to make sure that you are not losing any important details in your shadows and highlights.
